A hacker has posted sexually explicit comments on the Twitter, Facebook and blog accounts of Tory Member of Parliament Therese Coffey.

According to a report in the East Anglian Daily Times the messages included unpleasant remarks about Prime Minister David Cameron’s wife, Samantha Cameron.

In an interview with the newspaper the MP for Suffolk Coastal said: “I came back to my computer and discovered someone had hacked into my website, blog, Facebook and Twitter – it is very frustrating.”

She said she was having particular trouble getting help to regain control of her Twitter account.
“I have managed to get control back of them all apart from Twitter – I am still having trouble getting hold of anyone.

New phishing attack disguised as PDF reader update

Malicious e-mail attacks that look like PDF reader updates have been increasing in volume since the middle of June, says Symantec Hosted Services.
The phishing emails do not attempt to exploit vulnerabilities in the PDF format or link to malware disguised as a fake new PDF reader, but target credit card information instead.

The phishing email links to a professional-looking page made to advertise fictitious new PDF reader software, which in turn links to another site that uses social engineering techniques, such as offers of free software and other gifts, to encourage victims to pay for membership.

Victims are asked to enter their credit card details on a payment page that includes the logos of the top credit card providers and the logos of their secure payment systems.

The phishing scam is designed to capture these credit card details and is extremely dangerous because the site looks legitimate, said Jo Hurcombe, AV operations engineer at Symantec.

Any site that asks for money, if it is not using SSL encryption with a URL that starts with “https”, it is not secure, no matter what it claims.

Facebook now has 500 million ‘friends’

Social networking site Facebook, started six years ago by a 20 year old student in his Harvard dorm, announced it now has 500 million users worldwide.

This number means that if Facebook were a country, it would be the third largest in the world.

“This is an important milestone for all of you who have helped spread Facebook around the world.

Now a lot more people have the opportunity to stay connected with the people they care about,” Facebook’s founder and CEO Mark Zukerberg said in a message on his site.

Facebook crossed the 500 million milestone yesterday.

It had over 400 million active users by February this year.

Zukerberg said in celebration of the milestone, Facebook has launched a new application called ‘Facebook Stories’.

“We have put together a collection of stories you’ve shared with us about the impact Facebook and your friends have had on your lives,” he said.
Facebook is the world’s largest social networking site, surpassing Twitter which has 105 million users and LinkedIn with 70 million users.

Zukerberg started Facebook in February 2004, when he was a student at Harvard.

“Our mission at Facebook is to help make the world more open and connected. I could have never imagined all of the ways people would use Facebook when we were getting started 6 years ago,” he said.

About 70 per cent of Facebook users are outside the United States. It has 12 million users in India.

An average Facebook user has 130 friends and people spend over 700 billion minutes per month on the site.

India Unveils A Portable Computing Device Worth Rs 1,600

Today in New Delhi, union minister for Human Resource Development, Shri Kapil Sibal unveiled a low cost computing-cum-access device. The expected price of the showcased model is going to be around US$35 (approximately Rs 1,640) per unit, which is expected to gradually dip to about US$20 and eventually to around US10$.

Since the ongoing reduction in cost and enhancing the capabilities require constant research and development, IIT Rajasthan and other technical institutions are setting up research teams to look into a wide range of potential issues in the course of achieving the ultimate goal in terms of price and quality.

The press release issued by the Ministry of HRD also states the primary aim, which is, to reach these low cost devices to students and teachers of all colleges and universities, which will enable them to gain access to high-quality digital content. As stated, the three cardinal principles of the Education Policy viz., access, equity and quality could be served well by providing connectivity to all educational institutions, providing low cost and affordable access cum computing devices to students and teachers and providing high quality e-content free of cost to all learners in the Country. National Mission on Education through ICT (NMEICT) encompasses all the three elements.
